We know it’s harmful. We know we don’t want it. But do we know how best to prevent it?
We’re talking about mold.
Each year, homeowners across the country deal with this seemingly ever-present danger to some degree or another. While some areas of the country are more prone to mold than others, no one is completely immune from the damaging effects of this pesky fungi.
With that in mind, here are a few tips to help deal with mold.
First of all, mold cannot grow without moisture. Someplace dry will not be a breeding ground for mold. Homeowners deal with this problem when moisture—oftentimes undetected until a problem occurs—gathers in a location in the house, sometimes under the carpet, in a basement or in walls or windows.
Second, mold can be determined by a couple of indications. The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) lists discoloration as one indicator of mold. They also report that mold can be any color. In addition, mold is accompanied by a smell or odor that is musty or earthy.
As soon as mold is discovered, it is advised that it be cleaned and the problem causing the mold repaired. This can mean replacing windows or shingles or finding the spot where water is leaking into a basement floor.
A homeowner may need professional help, according to the CMHC, if the problem persists after repeated cleaning, the home is damp and moist and the amount of mold is quite large.
When these conditions are present, seek professional help from certified mold removal specialists.
While mold can be treated and steps taken to prevent it from returning, the sooner action is taken and the more exhaustive, the better for the homeowner.
