It used to be years ago, that the only choice for people to get drinking water came out of their taps. Now, we have a variety of choices and brands from which to choose. But are all these water choices the same as tap water—or are some better than others?
The last several years in particular have witnessed the proliferation of various water products, including bottled water with additives like vitamin water. It’s not uncommon now to see professional sports teams and athletes using vitamin water and sponsoring it.
According to MayoClinic.com, vitamin water has various vitamins and additives; some include sweeteners, as well. The Clinic said that the calories in vitamin water will work against those who are trying to lose weight and that it’s difficult to beat plain old water as a healthy drink.
Another drink that has emerged fairly recently is alkaline water—and along with it, a lot of controversy over its claims.
Again, according to MayoClinic.com, some studies have found that it can slow bone loss, but the site quickly follows that by saying more research needs to be completed in order to determine long-term effects.
While these and other drinks have emerged on the market over the last many years, it’s always a good idea to fully investigate them before substituting them for regular drinking water.
Some people assert that tap water doesn’t taste good or that they prefer other drinks for their taste. In that case, MayoClinic.com suggests trying sparkling water or putting a squirt of lemon or cranberry juice in your water. And many people find they enjoy the taste of tap water more after they install a water filter.
The important thing to remember is that we need water—and a fair amount of it—each day to maintain our health and lifestyles.
